El presidente del Gobierno, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, se reúne hoy con el primer ministro palestino, Salam Fayad, en el Palacio de la Moncloa para estudiar la situación del conflicto de Oriente Próximo y tratar de reanudar el diálogo durante la presidencia española de la UE.
Zapatero recibirá a Fayad después de un almuerzo que mantendrá con el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, en el Palacio de Viana, al que asistirán los embajadores palestinos destinados en Europa.
Fayad cerrará su agenda con una audiencia con el Rey en el Palacio de la Zarzuela.
Uno de los objetivos que España se ha marcado durante su presidencia rotatoria de la UE es impulsar el proceso de paz y hacer realidad la convivencia de los Estados israelí y palestino.
El diálogo entre ambas partes permanece estancado desde hace algo más de un año por la ofensiva militar que Israel llevó a cabo sobre la Franja de Gaza.
Los palestinos se niegan además a sentarse en la mesa de negociación con el Gobierno de Benjamin Netanyahu mientras no cese por completo la construcción de asentamientos de colonos judíos en Cisjordania.
