La gran víctima del cambio climático no será el oso polar, sino el pejerrey argentino, un pez característico de la cuenca del Río de la Plata. Según un estudio dirigido por el investigador Francesc Piferrer, del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (CSIC), en Barcelona, un incremento de cuatro grados en la temperatura del agua, considerado probable por el Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) de la ONU, provocaría una grave desproporción de sexos en esta especie.
Hasta 49 machos tendrían que pelear por cada hembra. Para Piferrer, esta asimetría “compromete seriamente la supervivencia” del pejerrey. El trabajo, publicado en la revista PLoS ONE, señala que, en las especies de peces cuyo sexo está determinado por la temperatura del agua, un aumento de 1,5 grados incrementaría la proporción de machos hasta un 73%.
En el mismo estudio, el equipo de investigadores reduce la importancia de la temperatura ambiental en la distinción sexual en algunas especies. “En muchas ocasiones, lo que se había interpretado como determinación del sexo dependiente de la temperatura eran, en realidad, perturbaciones en la proporción de sexos provocadas por unas condiciones anómalas”, sostiene Piferrer. A su juicio, la determinación del sexo en los peces depende, sobre todo, de la información genética, aunque reconoce que sus cifras son resultado de simulaciones y deben ser confirmadas.
