Poco antes de la Cumbre del Clima de Copenhague (Dinamarca), celebrada el pasado diciembre, cientos de correos electrónicos fueron robados de las cuentas personales de investigadores de la Unidad Climática de la Universidad de East Anglia (Reino Unido) y publicados en Internet. El contenido de estos correos, que sugería que los investigadores habían manipulado resultados, fue aprovechado por los escépticos del cambio climático para reafirmar su postura de que este no es más que un invento de los científicos.
La investigación oficial, encargada un funcionario independiente, aún no ha concluido. Sin embargo, la Oficina del Comisario de Información (ICO, de sus siglas en inglés) ya ha tomado una decisión. Según este organismo público de Reino Unido, los científicos ocultaron datos relevantes de sus investigaciones que debían haber sido publicados.
Sin embargo, los plazos para actuar legalmente contra los investigadores han expirado. "Informaremos a la universidad sobre la importancia y la obligación legal de publicar datos para el futuro", afirma el comisario del ICO, Graham Smith.
Mientras, el ex director de la Unidad implicada en el caso, Phil Jones, que firmaba algunos de los mensajes robados y que dimitió de forma preventiva mientras concluye la investigación oficial, ha insistido en que el contenido de los correos electrónicos fue "completamente sacado de contexto".
