Los verdecillos, unas aves que han colonizado las regiones urbanas europeas, consiguen compensar los efectos negativos del ruido de las ciudades dedicando más tiempo a cantar. Esta es una de las conclusiones de un estudio en el que han participado investigadores del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), y que ha sido publicado en la revista Behavioral Ecology.
"Estas aves pueden emplear hasta el 60% del tiempo en cantar a niveles de 70 decibelios, pero a partir de ese nivel empiezan a cantar menos, probablemente, porque dedicar más tiempo al canto puede interferir en exceso con tareas tan importantes como estar atento a los depredadores o a otros verdecillos vecinos", ha explicado el investigador del CSIC Mario Díaz, del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales. Según el estudio, el ajuste a los niveles de ruido indica que cantar conlleva riesgos.
"Incluso aves que han colonizado ambientes ruidosos, como los verdecillos, pueden verse condicionadas por el aumento del riesgo asociado a compensar los efectos del ruido cantando", ha añadido Díaz. Estos resultados sugieren que podrían producirse cambios bruscos en la distribución de las aves al sobrepasar ciertos umbrales de ruido. Además, los investigadores han observado que los animalillos cambian rápidamente su comportamiento según varía el nivel acústico entre los días laborables y los fines de semana.
La investigación se hace eco del creciente interés de la sociedad sobre la posible respuesta de los organismos a los cambios globales derivados de la influencia de los humanos en el funcionamiento del planeta. "Casi todas las predicciones son bastante catastrofistas, porque en general no contemplan la flexibilidad de los organismos a los cambios de su entorno. Nuestro trabajo muestra que las especies pueden compensar estas variaciones mediante comportamientos flexibles, pero solo hasta cierto punto", ha añadido el investigador.
