La agencia Associated Press (AP) ha lanzado una iniciativa para proteger su contenido y el de sus periódicos miembros y contempla emprender medidas legales contra los que usen el material sin licencia. La noticia, de la que se hace eco hoy la prensa en EEUU, se dio a conocer el lunes durante la reunión anual de la agencia de noticias en San Diego en California.
El diario The Wall Street Journal recuerda en su edición de hoy que el uso del contenido en la web se ha convertido en un asunto contencioso para los más de 1.400 periódicos miembros de AP en EEUU, que atraviesan por momentos críticos debido a la caída de sus ingresos publicitarios.
AP se ha dedicado a servir noticias a sus miembros durante la mayoría de sus 163 años de historia, tendencia que cambió durante la pasada década cuando comenzó a invertir más en contenidos fotográficos y vídeos. Además, con la llegada de Internet, empezó a empaquetar su contenido para que fuese utilizado por buscadores como Google y Yahoo.
El Journal recuerda hoy que ambos portales pagan a AP por usar su contenido, aunque muchos otros agregadores de noticias no lo hacen, de manera que la agencia de información planea desarrollar un sistema para seguir el contenido que se distribuye en Internet y determinar si se utiliza de forma legal.
Aunque en la nota publicada por AP no se especifican los agregadores a los que hace alusión, la empresa se refiere a los portales que actualmente sirven titulares de noticias mediante un sistema de recomendaciones, como Techmeme o Digg, muy populares en EEUU, similares al conocido Menéame.
