Una compañía de telecomunicaciones nepalí planea expandir sus servicios de telefonía móvil a la cima del monte Everest, para beneficio de quienes escalen la montaña más alta del mundo, dijo un responsable de la compañía el jueves.
Cientos de escaladores que suben cada año los 8.850 metros del Everest dependen de caros teléfonos por satélite para hablar con sus familias, ya que la remota región del Himalaya no dispone de infraestructura de comunicaciones.
"Vamos a establecer torres de móvil en Thakdin, Manjo, Pheriche y Gorak Shep, dejando la cumbre del Everest dentro del área de cobertura", dijo Anoop Ranjan Bhattarai, director de la unidad de servicios por satélite de Nepal Telecom.
Gorak Shep, en la región Solukhumbhu, está localizado cerca del campamento base del Everest. "Una torre de móvil en Gorak Shep dará conectividad a los escaladores en la cumbre", dijo Bhattarai, añadiendo que la compañía esperaba terminar el trabajo para mediados de junio.
Las lluvias anuales del monzón comienzan habitualmente a mediados de junio, y a partir de entonces el transporte de equipamientos por los caminos montañosos resulta difícil.
