Rafael Nadal, séxtuple campeón en Montecarlo, tuvo un estreno plácido en la segunda ronda del torneo al vencer al finlandés Jarkko Nieminen por 6-2 y 6-2 en poco más de una hora de partido.
Nadal no sufrió en exceso ante un Nieminen que jugó su sexto partido contra el número uno mundial, siempre con balance positivo para éste.
En octavos de final, Nadal se enfrentará al francés Richard Gasquet, que hoy venció al español Guillermo García-López por 6-2 y 6-1. Nadal y Gasquet mantuvieron enconados enfrentamientos en su etapa júnior, pero desde su paso al profesionalismo el español ganó en los siete partidos en los que se han enfrentado hasta el momento.
Tras su debut sobre tierra batida, Nadal volvió a dejar claro que no le preocupa perder el liderato en el ránking de la ATP tras su debut en tierra batida en el Masters 1.000 de Montecarlo, donde busca su séptimo entorchado consecutivo.
"Si dejo de ser número uno no será que lo he perdido, si no que el otro ha jugado mejor y me ha pasado. Digo lo que pienso, si alguien empieza como Novak (Djokovic) y defiende pocos puntos y yo muchos... aunque yo juegue bien, si él también juega bien me pasará. Pero el año es largo. Todos sabemos cómo funciona el ránking y será lo más lógico, que me pase, pero también tendrá su oportunidad Federer", indicó.

A pesar de haber derrotado a Jarkko Nieminen por un doble 6-2, Nadal no cree haber jugado "de fábula". "Pocas veces empiezas, y con un cambio de superficie, tras 11 meses y te sientes perfecto", apuntó en declaraciones a RTVE que recoge Europa Press.
De hecho el mallorquín desveló que los entrenamientos previos a su debut no fueron "fáciles", pero está satisfecho con su inicio en el Principado. "El primer partido me ha venido muy bien. He jugado mejor de lo que he entrenado y por momentos he estado muy bien con el 'drive'. A ver mañana, que tendré un rival complicado", finalizó en alusión a Richard Gasquet.
