Rusia convenció a la FIFA. El trabajo diplomático de los hombres de Putin, la fuerza económica del petróleo ruso, las conexiones con el fútbol a través del millonario Abramovich (dueño del Chelsea) y el hecho de que Europa oriental jamás organizó un Mundial, la han catapultado.
El Mundial de 2018 girará en torno a Moscú. Cuatro estadios de la capital albergarán partidos pero el auténtico centro de gravedad será el estadio Luzhniki, situado en el centro del complejo olímpico moscovita. Construido en 1956, su capacidad será ampliada de los 79. 000 actuales hasta sumar otros diez mil espectadores. Acogerá la inauguración y la final.
Otras 12 ciudades serán sede del Mundial. Entre ellas destacan Sochi (que construye un estadio para los Juegos Olímpicos de invierno), Kazán y San Petersburgo, con un campo de 68.000 espectadores. Siberia queda fuera del Mundial porque todas las sedes están en la parte europea del país, al oeste de los Urales.
Rusia promete mejorar las carreteras, nuevos trenes de alta velocidad y billetes de avión a diez dólares (los ofrece la compañía Avianova). La FIFA le ha creído.
