Los dos ciudadanos españoles detenidos desde el viernes pasado en Gambia por su condición homosexual fueron liberados ayer, según confirmó un portavoz del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores. El responsable de este departamento en Gambia comunicó la noticia por la tarde a su homólogo español, Miguel Angel Moratinos, en una conversación telefónica.
Horas antes de su liberación, un portavoz del ministerio señalaba que existen “motivos para el optimismo”. La diplomacia estaba en marcha. El cónsul de Gambia en Barcelona, Juan Antonio del Moral, afirmaba compartir la misma esperanza y, de hecho, Exteriores disponía ya de dos billetes de avión para que los detenidos regresen a España en cuanto recobrasen la libertad.
Los arrestados, de 56 y 54 años, conocieron la noticia en la comisaría de policía de Kotu, una localidad turística situada en la costa, junto a la capital, Banjul. Ambos fueron detenidos el pasado viernes y podrían haberse enfrentado a penas de hasta 14 años de cárcel por atentar contra los principios religiosos que rigen la dictadura gambiana.
Las asociaciones más representativas en la lucha por los derechos del colectivo gay subrayaron ayer que este caso sitúa ante la opinión pública una realidad que afecta a más de 80 países, en los que la homosexualidad se condena con la cárcel o la pena de muerte.
La Federación Estatal de Lesbianas, Gays, Transexuales y Bisexuales (FELGTB) pidió al Gobierno que “impulse la erradicación de las legislaciones que penalizan la homosexualidad” y recordó que los homosexuales de Gambia sufren situaciones similares “todos los días”.
