El gobierno de la Generalitat ha acordado este martes iniciar el proceso para declarar la sardana "danza nacional de Cataluña", en el marco de la regulación del patrimonio cultural intangible, según ha informado el ejecutivo al acabar su reunión semanal.
Considerada una de las expresiones "más relevantes de la cultura popular y tradicional catalana", la sardana, sin embargo, no se ha reconocido nunca oficialmente como la danza nacional de Cataluña, y es en este contexto en el que en 2008 la Federación Sardanista de Cataluña impulsó una campaña a la que ya se han adherido en total 194 ayuntamientos.
Esta danza, que se baila en grupo y en círculo, empezó a arraigar en la comarca gerundense del Empordá; desde finales del siglo XIX se extendió por toda Cataluña y en 1871 llegó a Barcelona.
De la antigua danza del contrapaso, se evolucionó hasta la sardana corta y fue el compositor Pep Ventura quien reformó su estructura musical, ampliando la cobla y convirtiéndola en danza contemporánea, popular e interclasista.
El movimiento sardanista creció de la mano del catalanismo político y adquirió la condición de símbolo durante las dictaduras de Primo de Rivera y de Francisco Franco.
Actualmente, cada año se celebran más de 3.500 bailes o audiciones en Cataluña, así como en otras ciudades de España, y en el extranjero se celebran más de 200 "aplecs" (fiestas sardanistas).
Asimismo, existen centenares de grupos, diferentes federaciones y entidades que, desde mediados del siglo XX, han generado un movimiento centrado en esta danza en el que también participan investigadores musicales e historiadores.
