Internet se ha convertido en una herramienta más de los servicios de espionaje chino. Según cables diplomáticos filtrados por Wikileaks y publicados por el diario El País en su edición digital, Estados Unidos sospecha que las autoridades chinas utilizan hackerspara espiar a gobiernos y empresas occidentales y al Dalai Lama.
Entre las prácticas de ciber-espionaje de Pekín destaca la aplicación de Byzantine Hades, un programa de incursiones en los sistemas informáticos de la Administración de Estados Unidos, gobiernos europeos y empresas del sector de la defensa. Un documento habla, por ejemplo, de una reunión, en 2008, de representantes de países occidentales para hablar del asunto. Tras describir los ciberataques de los que son víctimas, todos coinciden en que los atacantes son chinos, "potencialmente asociados con el Gobierno de Pekín". Washington investiga las actividades de la empresa china Topsec, que emplea a hackers y entrena a militares gracias a fondos públicos.
Un cable también apunta al ejército chino como posible autor de ciberataques contra objetivos tibetanos y las oficinas del Dalai Lama.
Pero uno de los blancos prioritarios de las autoridades chinas es Google. Los cables filtrados por Wikileaks muestran que miembros del Comité Permanente del Politburó del Partido Comunista de China (PCCh) la máxima autoridad política del gigante asiático dirigieron un ciberataque contra el buscador internet en 2009. El objetivo era penetrar en los servidores de Google para conseguir informaciones privadas sobre ciudadanos chinos y, en particular, sobre disidentes políticos.
La fuente de la embajada de Estados Unidos en Pekín es un familiar de un miembro del Politburó. En los documentos de la diplomacia estadounidense, este sujeto "a proteger" confiesa, sin embargo, que no sabe si el primer ministro chino, Wen Jiabao, estaba al tanto de un asunto "de naturaleza al cien por cien político".
En enero de este año, Googledenunció el ciberataque y abrió una crisis con el Gobierno chino. Pekín es consciente de sus límites, puesto que sus servidores funcionan con programas de EEUU.
