La Cámara de Representantes de EEUU aprobó este miércoles por abrumadora mayoría la revocación de una ley de 1993 que prohíbe a los homosexuales prestar servicio militar, aunque la medida espera su voto en el Senado.
Con 250 votos a favor y 175 en contra, los legisladores aprobaron levantar el veto a soldados homosexuales en las postrimerías de la sesión 111 del Congreso.
Una medida similar en el Senado fue presentada por el senador independiente Joe Lieberman, pero aún no tiene fecha para su votación.
"Hoy tenemos una oportunidad para votar una vez más para cerrarle la puerta a una injusticia fundamental en nuestra nación. La revocación de la política discriminatoria... honrará el servicio y sacrificio de quienes han dedicado sus vidas a la protección del pueblo estadounidense", dijo la presidenta de la Cámara Baja, Nancy Pelosi.
"Espero que podamos alentar al Senado a que tome una medida que se debió haber tomado hace mucho", subrayó.
La ley de 1993, conocida en inglés como "Don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) prohíbe discutir la orientación sexual de los soldados, y los homosexuales pueden dar servicio militar siempre y cuando no divulguen su orientación sexual.
