El gabinete del primer ministro israelí, Benjamin Netanyahu, confirmó este miércoles que Israel desbloqueará los 100 millones de dólares de impuestos que retenía a la Autoridad Palestina como represalia por su entrada en la Unesco hace hoy justo un mes.
El dinero, que proviene de retenciones que aplica Israel a los productos importados de Palestina, era vital para pagar el sueldo de 150.000 funcionarios, tal y como explicó el primer ministro Salam Fayad.
La razón esgrimida por el entorno de Netanyahu para dar marcha atrás, según recoge el diario Haaretz, es el frenazo a los intentos de los palestinos para ser reconocidos como Estado independiente por la ONU y la lejana posibilidad de una reconciliación real entre las facciones de Hamas y Fatah.
El ministro de Exteriores israelí y miembro destacado del ala ultraderechista del Gobierno, Avigdor Lieberman, no ha dudado en criticar la medida de Netanyahu al interpretar que ese dinero será destinado para armar a Hamás en la franja de Gaza.
En cualquier caso, el Ejecutivo israelí advirtió de que seguirá con atención el uso que se da a los fondos y no descarta volver a congelarlos en el futuro.
