Ignorando la tragedia que abate el país, la Junta Militar de Birmania se congratuló de la "masiva" participación en el referéndum constitucional celebrado el sábado en las áreas no afectadas por el ciclón Nargis, pero no cedió en su negativa a permitir que las organizaciones internacionales entren a distribuir la ayuda con su propia logística.
El régimen no ofreció cifras concretas, pero comunicó en la televisión estatal que el plebiscito "fue un éxito".
La ayuda internacional comenzó a llegar de manera más fluida, y con las carreteras ya despejadas de escombros y árboles caídos, decenas de camiones con material de emergencia para los damnificados pudieron llegar a destino, si bien la Junta reparte con su propio criterio las donaciones.
Un barco que transportaba el primer cargamento de ayuda de la Cruz Roja se hundió en el delta.
La televisión estatal dio un nuevo balance del ciclón, que sitúa los muertos en 28.458 y los desaparecidos en 33.416. Hay un millón y medio de desplazados, de los que 206.000 se hallan en destartalados campos.
"A menos que haya una inyección masiva de ayuda, expertos y abastecimiento, esto va a ser una tragedia inimaginable", dijo Greg Beck, del International Rescue Committee.
El ministro británico de Asuntos Exteriores, David Miliband, dijo que el ciclón se está convirtiendo en una catástrofe épica "en gran parte por la negligencia maligna del régimen birmano".
