Al menos ocho reclusos murieron hoy y 16 resultaron heridos durante un tiroteo registrado en la cárcel de La Planta, en el centro de Caracas, indicó la directora nacional de Servicios Penitenciarios, Consuelo Cerrada. "Se presentó una situación interna lamentable entre los pabellones dos y tres en la que ocho internos fallecieron y 16 resultaron heridos". Los heridos fueron trasladados a un hospital y entre los fallecidos no hay familiares de los reclusos ni guardias. "Todos los fallecidos son reclusos, la mayoría por armas de fuego", añadió la funcionaria.
El tiroteo comenzó hacia las 9.00 hora local (13.30 GMT) por rencillas internas, según aseguró Cerrada, quien negó que la causa fuese un supuesto traslado de presos a otra cárcel. Cerrada desmintió versiones de algunos familiares que esperaban fuera de la prisión, quienes aseguraron que la Guardia Nacional intervino en el tiroteo para controlar la situación. La directora de servicios Penitenciarios dijo que el enfrentamiento fue exclusivamente entre reclusos.
Este suceso coincide con la publicación del informe de 2009 de la ONG Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones, en el que se dice que el año pasado murieron 366 reclusos en las cárceles del país y 635 resultaron heridos. El número de muertos en 2009 disminuyó respecto a 2008, cuando se registraron 422, e igualmente el de heridos, que en 2008 fueron 854.
