Un oficial estadounidense negando que Pakistán tuviera algo que ver en los atentados de Bombay en 2008, o India pagando a los talibanes para atentar en Pakistán, eran historias demasiado jugosas como para perder el tiempo en comprobar las fuentes. Cinco periódicos paquistaníes llevaron a sus portadas el jueves unos supuestos cables diplomáticos revelados por Wikileaks que eran falsos.
Los cables diplomáticos filtrados podían convertirse en un arma arrojadiza inestimable. Quizá por eso la agencia de noticias paquistaní Online difundió una información que no ha desvelado cómo obtuvo. En ella se narraban las supuestas operaciones de India en regiones como Waziristán, donde el Gobierno indio estaría financiando a los islamistas afganos. También se recogían informes de EEUU que negaban la implicación de la inteligencia paquistaní en los atentados de Bombay o que calificaban al antiguo jefe del Ejército indio, Deepak Kapur, como un "cretino" y un "incompetente".
The Guardian, con acceso a los cables de Wikileaks, lo desmintió hoy todo y forzó la rectificación de Jang y The News. Otros, como The Nation, prefirieron seguir atizando la propaganda a costa de la verdad.
