El presidente del Congreso de los Diputados, José Bono, ha sido investido "caballero andante" por parte de la Asociación Quijote 2.000, durante un acto celebrado en el Teatro Municipal Quijano de Ciudad Real, y en el que fue distinguida también como dama la princesa Mónika zu Löwenstein.
Dicha entidad concede este título cada año a personas a las que considera amantes de la obra universal de Cervantes y defensoras de los valores que predicó el caballero de la triste figura, así como a amantes de La Mancha. Bono ha recibido adarga, lanza, peto, espaldar y yelmo por parte del presidente de la Asociación, Miguel Taboada.
El presidente del Congreso se ha declarado orgulloso de que le hagan objeto de una distinción "tan cervantina y tan manchega". Ha añadido que la acepta "con humildad y sabedor de que claramente se le otorga al presidente que fue de Castilla-La Mancha y al del Congreso de los Diputados, más que un merecimiento en el terreno particular o personal".
El premio ha incluido un juramento en el que se compromete a "seguir leyendo el Quijote, a disfrutar con su lectura y a defender los valores de La Mancha".
La entidad ha investido asimismo "dama andante" a la princesa Mónika zu Löwenstein, presidenta de la ONG Helsinki-España, quien ha dicho: "recojo este premio en nombre de 140 universidades de todo el mundo que colaboran con nosotros".
Han sido también distinguidos el empresario de Lepe Patrocinio Mora, en reconocimiento a su solidaridad con los inmigrantes, a los que invita a cenar en navidad; la ONG Solidaridad Manchega (Solman), que trabaja en proyectos de desarrollo en los países pobres, y el empresario hostelero de la ciudad José Macías Valls.
