El secretario de Defensa de Estados Unidos, Robert Gates, enviará otros 1.400 soldados adicionales a Afganistán, que se espera estén desplegados sobre el terreno en las próximas semanas, para aumentar la presión sobre los talibanes.
El portavoz del Pentágono, Dave Lapan, señaló hoy que Gates aprobó el miércoles el despliegue adicional de tropas con el fin de consolidar los avances logrados en Afganistán y redoblar la presión sobre los insurgentes.
El presidente de EE.UU., Barack Obama, aprobó hace un año el envío de 30.000 soldados adicionales al país centro-asiático y dejó abierta la posibilidad de mandar otras 3.000 tropas si la situación lo requería.
En la actualidad están desplegados en Afganistán 97.000 soldados estadounidenses.
La Casa Blanca quiere empezar a reducir el contingente militar en Afganistán en julio de este año.
El diario The Wall Street Journal, que ofreció hoy en exclusiva la noticia del aumento de tropas, señaló que probablemente la mayoría de los nuevos marines estarán concentrados en el sur del país, en torno a Kandahar.
El Journal dice que el Pentágono podría autorizar enviar en total 3.000 soldados más a la zona.
El rotativo sostiene que el Pentágono también considera reemplazar algunas unidades de apoyo con fuerzas de combate adicionales en Afganistán.
La violencia en el país centro-asiático se recrudece tradicionalmente cada año al final del invierno, cuando la nieve comienza a derretirse en las montañas, lo que permite a los insurgentes talibanes ocultos en el vecino Pakistán regresar a Afganistán.
