Esto no es un simulacro. Un asteroide pasará hoy por la Tierra a poco más de un tercio de la distancia entre el planeta y la Luna. Este sería el paso más cercano de un objeto junto a la Tierra producido recientemente, al menos hasta que otro asteroide, el 2007 XB23 pase rozando en 2024.
El asteroide que hoy raspará nuestro planeta, llamado 2010 AL30, fue descubierto gracias al programa Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid financiado por la NASA y anunciado el pasado lunes en el Centro de Planetas Menores del Observatorio Astrofísico Smithsonian.
El corto período de tiempo entre la localización del objeto y su intersección con la Tierra es un buen recordatorio de que es muy difícil poder predecir con tiempo suficiente todos los objetos cuyas direcciones u órbitas podrían coincider con las de la Tierra, e incluso chocar con nuestro planeta.
"Los visitantes que vienen al centro muchas veces me preguntan si me preocupan los objetos que aquí estudiamos", ha comentado el doctor P. Clay Sherrod del Arkansas Sky Observatories, en un hilo en de un foro en Yahoo. "Mi respuesta es siempre la misma", asegura: "No me preocupan los objetos a los que hacemos seguimiento... Me preocupan más los que nunca vemos venir".
Cabe señalar que un asteroide tan pequeño, de entre 10 y 15 metros de diámetro, incluso aunque entrara a la atmósfera terrestre, probablemente no causaría daños importantes ya que se desintegraría antes de alcanzar la superficie del planeta, aseguran los expertos.
