La serbia Jelena Jankovic derrotó (6-3, 3-6 y 6-3) a la española Anabel Medina y puso el 3-0 para su país en la eliminatoria de Copa Federación, lo que certifica el descenso de las pupilas de Miguel Margets del Grupo Mundial, que nunca se han visto en una situación similar.
La número cuatro del mundo destrozó las esperanzas españolas al superar con muchos problemas a la valenciana, lo que impidió la difícil empresa de remontar el 2-0 adverso del sábado, algo que sí realizaron las españolas ante Bélgica en Jerez de la Frontera en el 2004.
El partido, que venía precedido de su anterior duelo en las semifinales del Andalucía Tennis Experience, en el que la balcánica se impuso cómodamente por 7-5 y 6-2, comenzó con duros intercambios entre ambas jugadoras y con la consecución de la primera manga a manos de Jankovic, que acertó en las dos bolas de 'break' de las que dispuso.
Medina, número uno española, comenzó el segundo set con mayor confianza al verse contra las cuerdas y se adjudicó este parcial tras desplegar su mejor juego y romper el servicio de la serbia en tres ocasiones. Con el empate en el marcador, el tercer juego resultaba crucial.
Y no pudo empezar de peor forma para la torrentina, que cedió un 'break' tempranero (3-1) y vio cómo Jankovic se acercaba a la victoria. Pero el arrojo de la valenciana, como siempre muy luchadora, redujo distancias hasta la igualada (3-3).
El séptimo juego fue el clave del encuentro al consumar la ex número uno la definitiva rotura que derrumbó las aspiraciones españolas por mantenerse en liza en la élite del Grupo Mundial para el 2010.
