MADRID.- Arqueólogos de la Universidad Bar-Ilan han descubierto la puerta de entrada a la ciudad bíblica de los filisteos conocida como Gat y que, según las Sagradas Escrituras, era el hogar de Goliat y la ciudad más grande del planeta durante el siglo décimo antes de Cristo. Las excavaciones se llevan a cabo en el Parque Nacional de Tel-Zafit, a medio camino entre Jerusalén y Ashkelon, en el centro de Israel.
El autor principal del trabajo, Aren Maeir, ha explicado que la puerta de la ciudad es una de las más grandes que se ha encontrado en Israel y es una prueba de la situación y la influencia de la ciudad de Gat durante este período.
Además de la puerta monumental, se ha hallado también una impresionante muralla, así como diversos edificio en sus proximidades, como un templo y una planta de producción de hierro.
Los descubrimientos, así como la propia ciudad, fueron destruidos por Hazael rey de Siria, que la sitió y acabó con todo en torno al 830 a.C. Concretamente, la puerta de la ciudad de Gat se menciona en la Biblia, en la historia de la huida de David del rey Saúl y se apunta como lugar de procedencia del gigante Goliat.
