Stratfor es la creación personal de George Friedman. Hijo de supervivientes del Holocausto, logró huir de Hungría a Estados Unidos con sus padres. Tras estudiar Ciencias Políticas, empezó a desarrollar su interés por hipotéticos conflictos militares, incluido el diseño de prehistóricos juegos de ordenador de guerra.
La actividad de la Stratfor también incluye actividades de lobby para terceros. En unos correos intercambiados con Karl Rove, el arquitecto de las victorias electorales de George Bush, un abogado logra que Friedman interceda ante él para lograr la visita del expresidente de EEUU a Indonesia.
El trabajo de la compañía ha resultado mucho menos emocionante de lo que cuenta Friedman. La mayoría de los confidenciales que vendían a sus clientes estaban hechos a base de mezclar información obtenida por las agencias de información más comunes y accesibles, y aderezarla con informes internos de algunos servicios de estudios bancarios o financieros.
La obsesión de Friedman es la predicción. Tras la caída del Muro de Berlín predijo un conflicto militar entre Estados Unidos y Japón. En su libro Los próximos cien años (Destino) vaticina el colapso de China y una tercera Guerra Mundial entre EEUU y Japón, Turquía y Alemania. En ese conflicto, los japoneses atacarían a las bases espaciales estadounidenses desde la Luna. Imaginación no le falta.
