El integrista islamista Umar Patek, de 45 años, compareció este lunes ante un tribunal en Indonesia, acusado de fabricar las bombas que explotaron en salas de fiestas abarrotadas de turistas australianos en Bali, en 2002. Mataron a 202 personas.
Patek también está acusado de mezclar sustancias químicas para la fabricación de 13 bombas que detonaron en cinco iglesias en Yakarta en la Nochebuena de 2000, y que causó la muerte a 15 personas. Fuentes de seguridad le vinculan al grupo ilegal Yemah Islamiya, cercano a Al Qaeda.
Las autoridades paquistaníes capturaron a Patek en enero de 2011 en la localidad militar de Abbottabad, donde las fuerzas de EEUU abatieron a Osama bin Laden, en mayo de 2011. No obstante, se desconoce si ambos se conocían.
"El procesado se reunió con Imam Samudra [figura clave en los atentados de Bali, condenado y ejecutado en 2008] y lo invitó a matar extranjeros y turistas en Bali utilizando bombas", denunció este lunes el fiscal del Estado Fri Hartono, en Yakarta. "Samudra pidió al procesado que mezclara explosivos para las bombas y él aceptó". El imputado responderá a los cargos el 20 de febrero.
La amenaza del islamismo radical en Indonesia ha disminuido en los últimos años por una campaña de las Fuerzas de Seguridad contra Yemah Islamiya y grupos asociados, y también por las condenas a líderes integristas, según diversos analistas.
Patek es uno de los pocos radicales clave para entender la conexión entre los integristas islamistas en el sudeste asiático y Al Qaeda. Estaba buscado por Estados Unidos, Filipinas y Australia.
