Syrians in Tadamon, Damascus, celebrated the arrest of Amjad Youssef, a key perpetrator of the 2013 massacre that killed 288 people.

Youssef was an intelligence officer under Bashar al-Assad’s government, the former Syrian president, who became well-known after footage was leaked in 2022 showing him and other perpetrators committing massacres.

Videos showed Youssef and others mocking blindfolded victims as he encouraged them to run unknowingly towards a pit, before shooting them from behind. The mass grave and subsequent videos were key evidence of war crimes committed by Assad’s authorities.
