El agujero de la capa de ozono sobre la Antártida se ha reducido a su menor tamaño en los últimos cinco años. Eso es lo que aseguró este viernes el Instituto Nacional del Agua e Investigación Atmosférica de Nueva Zelanda.
Los científicos calcularon que el tamaño del agujero es de 22 millones de kilómetros cuadrados, cuando en 2009 era de 24 millones y en 2000, el año en que se registro la mayor brecha, 29 millones.
El déficit de la masa de ozono también se ha reducido a 27 millones de toneladas, comparado con las 35 millones de toneladas de 2009 y las 43 de 2000.
"Podemos decir que el agujero en la capa de ozono está mejorando de acuerdo con las observaciones de este año", dijo el científico atmosférico Stephen Wood.
Wood apuntó que las iniciativas internacionales como el Protocolo de Montreal de 1987 están dando resultado.
"Hemos tenido unos cuantos años sucesivos con agujeros menos severos. Estos es una señal de que estaríamos empezando a ver una recuperación", dijo Wood.
La capa de ozono, que protege a los humanos de las radiaciones ultravioletas, disminuyó, según los científicos, por el efecto de productos como el cloroflurocarbono, utilizados en refrigeradores o aerosoles, prohibidos a partir del acuerdo de Montreal.
El agujero en la capa de ozono se forma cada año en la Antártida entre agosto y septiembre, y se cierra entre noviembre y diciembre.
