El hallazgo de un conjunto de fósiles en una cantera marroquí ha llevado a la identificación del que es, hasta hoy, el primer elefante: un animal de unos cinco kilos que vivió hace 60 millones de años.
El grupo de los proboscídeos hoy sólo comprende tres especies, pero antiguamente fue mucho más amplio y diverso. Hasta ahora, el abuelo de estos animales era el Phosphatherium, encontrado en la cuenca de fosfatos de Ouled Abdoun (Marruecos).
A sólo unos kilómetros de distancia del anterior han aparecido parte del cráneo y piezas dentales de la nueva especie, Eritherium azzouzorum, de rasgos primitivos y un peso calculado entre tres y ocho kilos. Según escribe en PNAS el autor del hallazgo, el paleontólogo del Museo de Historia Natural de París, Emmanuel Gheerbrant, la estimación media es de unos cinco kilos, algo similar a los pequeños mamíferos.
Además de su importancia como ancestro de los elefantes, Eritherium es uno de los mamíferos placentarios más tempranos conocidos, anticipando la expansión de estos animales sólo cinco millones de años después de la extinción de los dinosaurios.
