El SOLO-TREC quiere bucear de forma perpetua por el océano para aportar datos científicos sobre la salinidad y la temperatura del agua. La principal novedad de este dispositivo, diseñado por el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro de la NASA, es que se alimenta únicamente de energía renovable.
Durante cinco años, un equipo de científicos ha estado inmerso en el proyecto SOLO-TREC. El resultado es este prototipo de robot submarino que recibe energía gracias a la diferencia de temperatura a distintas profundidades del océano. Cada inmersión hasta los 500 metros genera 1,7 watios-horas, que sirven para mantener cargados los dispositivos que alberga el robot y para controlar el mecanismo de flotación.
Además, el aparato cuenta con un GPS que monitoriza su localización y con un transmisor a través del cual recibe nuevas instrucciones cada vez que alcanza la superficie. "Con algo más de potencia podremos instalar más sensores en el SOLO-TREC, como detectores químicos, biológicos y acústicos", explica el ingeniero responsable del proyecto, Jack Jones.
Este ingenio puede ayudar a reducir el consumo de combustible en otros vehículos submarinos "si se aplica su tecnología de recarga", detalla Jones, aunque, de momento, la eficiencia del dispositivo sólo alcanza el 2%. El equipo espera desarrollar una gran flota de vehículos de este tipo para mejorar las predicciones climáticas y meteorológicas. Aunque de momento no han analizado su desarrollo a gran escala, "su precio podría superar los 16.000 euros", concluye el ingeniero.
