El largo culebrón de una mujer de Minesota en EEUU enjuiciada por descargar música desde Internet ha llagado a su fin. Jammie Thomas ha sido condenada finalmente a pagar 1,92 millones de dólares a varias compañías discográficas por la obtención ilegal de 24 canciones.
La acusada deberá pagar un total de 80.000 dólares por cada una de las canciones descargadas, según ha informado el diario local Star Tribune en su edición digital. La multa fue impuesta por un jurado de Mineápolis, que concluyó que Thomas, de 32 años, había cometido una "violación voluntaria" de los "copyrights" de las canciones.
Se trata del segundo juicio para Thomas, que en 2006 se enfrentó a seis discográficas que la acusaban de descargar y distribuir más de 1.700 canciones en el gestor de descargas Kazaa. El caso, que terminó siendo anulado tras considerar el juez que había instruido de forma errónea al jurado, preveía una multa mucho menor que la actual para la acusada: un total de 220.000 dólares.
En el proceso que concluyó hoy, el jurado justificó su decisión con capturas de pantalla de la red de descargas Kazaa y discos con música descargada de la colección personal de música de Thomas. Además, aclaró que tanto la reproducción como la distribución de material protegido por derechos de autor constituye una infracción, aunque matizó que "poner algo a disposición de otros" no constituye distribución.
De las 30.000 denuncias presentadas por la Asociación de la Industria de Grabación de EEUU (RIAA) contra personas acusadas de descargar archivos, la de Thomas es la única que ha terminado en un juicio con jurado.
