Actualizado:La industria mundial de la energía eólica está muy lejos de instalar la capacidad necesaria para limitar el calentamiento global, según un informe del Consejo Mundial de la Energía Eólica (GWEC).
Además, el ritmo actual con que se está implantando la energía eólica no será suficiente para alcanzar el objetivo de cero emisiones a mediados de este siglo, según afirmó el jueves el GWEC en un comunicado.
Esto sucede a pesar de que en 2020 se instalarán 93 gigavatios (GW), lo que supone un aumento del 53% con respecto al año anterior.
Sin embargo, el planeta necesita instalar al menos 180 GW de nueva energía eólica cada año para limitar el calentamiento global a mucho menos de 2°C por encima de los niveles preindustriales, y hasta 280 GW anuales para cumplir con el nivel de cero emisiones netas para 2050, dijo el grupo industrial.
"Nuestras previsiones de mercado actuales indican que en los próximos cinco años se instalarán 469 GW de capacidad eólica adicionales", declaró Ben Backwell, director ejecutivo de GWEC.
"En la actualidad estamos en camino de tener un déficit de 86 GW de media cada año", añadió.
Según el informe, los responsables políticos deben eliminar los trámites burocráticos y acelerar la concesión de licencias y permisos para los proyectos, así como aumentar las inversiones en redes, puertos y otras infraestructuras que permitan un aumento de las instalaciones eólicas.
China y Estados Unidos concentraron el 75% de la nueva capacidad el año pasado, ya que la eliminación gradual de tarifas y la aplicación de créditos fiscales a la producción a finales de año impulsaron las nuevas instalaciones, a pesar de las dificultades generadas por la crisis del COVID-19.
La capacidad total de energía eólica a nivel mundial es ahora de 742 GW, lo que ayuda al planeta a evitar la emisión de más de 1.100 millones de toneladas de dióxido de carbono al año, una cifra que equivale a las emisiones anuales de CO2 de Sudamérica.
