El Kremlin despidió el viernes a un jefe de policía regional después de que un periodista muriera a causa de las lesiones provocadas cuando estaba bajo custodia, un episodio más de la serie de escándalos de violencia y corrupción que han salpicado a las fuerzas policiales rusas, según informaron diversas agencias de noticias.
Konstantin Popov, de 47 años, murió el miércoles tras ser golpeado cuando estaba bajo custodia judicial a principios de enero en la ciudad siberiana de Tomsk, a unos 3.100 km al este de Moscú. Sus colegas afirman que fue torturado.
El jefe de la policía de Tomsk, el general Viktor Grechman, fue despedido por orden del presidente Dmitry Medvedev, informaron las agencias estatales RIA e ITAR-TASS, citando responsables del Ministerio del Interior.
Medvedev pidió el mes pasado una profunda restructuración de la policía, diciendo que las malas conductas estaban provocando la irritación de la opinión pública y minando la autoridad del país.
Recientes brotes de violencia policial, desde matanzas indiscriminadas por parte de agentes ebrios hasta palizas con la porra a un hombre hasta matarlo, se han sumado a la percepción negativa generalizada de las fuerzas policiales en Rusia, exacerbadas por la crecientes evidencias de corrupción.
Popov fue trasladado al hospital el 4 de enero con graves lesiones en órganos internos tras ser golpeado por un agente en una celda para borrachos, dijeron los investigadores.
El supuesto asaltante, Alexei Mitayev, de 26 años, ha sido acusado de asalto agravado y abuso a la autoridad, dijo el Comité Investigador de la Fiscalía General.
