El vil asesinato del policía Eduardo Puelles tiene dos lecturas obligadas. La más importante, fuera de toda duda, corresponde a la vertiente humana del drama: en su delirio criminal, ETA ha segado la vida de una persona y ha dejado sumidos en un desconsuelo irreparable a una viuda y dos huérfanos, así como a numerosos familiares y amigos de un ser humano al que todos apreciaban por su bondad.
La otra lectura, inevitable, es de carácter político. La acción etarra constituye la primera prueba de fuego para el Gobierno del socialista Patxi López, que, con el apoyo del PP vasco, puso fin a más de tres décadas de gobierno del PNV. López ha dado contundente respuesta a los terroristas, al avisarles de que su único camino es el de la cárcel. Y la reacción del PP y de los demás partidos del arco parlamentario ha sido –como debe ser– de apoyo irrestricto al Ejecutivo en su estrategia antiterrorista.
En momentos en que crece en el mundo aberzale la desa-fección por la lucha armada como medio reivindicativo, la dirección militar de ETA ha decidido lanzar al sector más dubitativo del nacionalismo radical y a las instituciones españolas y vascas el mensaje de que la banda mantiene su capacidad para hacer daño y es quien realmente dicta las leyes y los tiempos al independentismo vasco.
