Los avances tecnológicos han permitido que la mortalidad de niños prematuros nacidos antes de las 37 semanas completas de gestación con un peso muy bajo al nacer haya disminuido en los países industrializados. Sin embargo, el número de bebés que sobreviven con secuelas graves, sobre todo neurológicas, se ha incrementado en un 3% en los últimos años.
¿Es necesario obstinarse en prolongar la vida de un niño abocado al sufrimiento? Es la pregunta que se formula el Grupo de Opinión del Observatorio de Bioética y Derecho (OBD) de la Universidad de Barcelona (UB), que ayer presentó un documento pionero en Europa para que la limitación del esfuerzo terapéutico (LET) en las unidades de neonatología de los hospitales sea considerada una práctica ética (legal ya lo es) en una serie de supuestos específicos.
Según Frederic Raspall, jefe del Servicio de Neonatología y Pediatría del Hospital de Barcelona y uno de los coordinadores del texto, se trata de practicar "el destete terminal: retirarle poco a poco el ventilador que le ayuda a respirar, administrarle un sedante para que no sufra... a la vez que el médico explica a los padres cómo se está desarrollando todo el proceso".
Raspall insiste en no confundir eutanasia con LET. "Si la finalidad de alimentar a un niño es que crezca y se desarrolle, ¿qué sentido tiene darle de comer si se morirá en unas horas y no se cumplirá con los objetivos de la nutrición?", concluye.
