El presidente Barack Obama llamó al primer ministro de Israel, Benyamin Netanyahu, para reiterarle el compromiso de Estados Unidos con la seguridad de ese país.
Un comunicado de la Casa Blanca indicó que Obama y Netanyahu mantuvieron una conversación de 20 minutos en la que el presidente repitió los elementos principales del discurso que pronunció la semana pasada en el Cairo, Egipto, incluyendo el compromiso estadounidense con la seguridad israelí.
En ese discurso pronunciado en la Universidad de El Cairo, Obama manifestó su intención de forjar una nueva relación con el mundo musulmán.
También señaló la necesidad de que la región debe erradicar la violencia extremista en todas sus formas y resolver el conflicto permanente que viven palestinos e israelíes.
Obama manifestó a Netanyahu su interés por el próximo discurso que pronunciará a finales de este mes el primer ministro, especialmente el tema vinculado a la paz y la seguridad en la región.
El primer ministro también ha anunciado su intención de reunirse con el presidente palestino, Mahmud Abás, y poner en marcha un proceso de paz centrado en temas económicos, políticos y de seguridad.
El comunicado indicó que Obama también informó a Netanyahu sobre el viaje al Oriente Medio del enviado especial de paz de EEUU, George Mitchell.
