El tránsito constante de vehículos es molesto, contaminante y ruidoso, pero el inventor británico Peter Hughes ha descubierto cómo sacarle alguna ventaja a tanta incomodidad. Hughes ha diseñado una plataforma con bandas sonoras y, cada vez que un vehículo pasa sobre ella y ejerce presión, se acciona un mecanismo por el movimiento vertical que activa un generador eléctrico. El dispositivo ha sido bautizado como Energía en el asfalto (Electro Kinetic Road Ramp , en inglés).
La empresa española Eco-Raec cuenta con los derechos de explotación para España, Francia y Portugal y esta semana ha presentado el prototipo en el Salón Internacional de Energía y Medio Ambiente (GENERA), celebrado en Madrid. Las primeras pruebas se realizarán a finales de julio en Inglaterra.
Cuanto más tráfico, mejor. El sitio idóneo es el acceso a centros comerciales, peajes o aparcamientos, donde el tránsito de vehículos es continuo. Y la aplicación directa de la electricidad generada es el suministro a semáforos o farolas, el alumbrado del centros de ocio, y la iluminación interior de aparcamientos. "En caso de que haya soportes que precisen de energía eléctrica en las inmediaciones, la electricidad se puede verter a la red", explica el director de Eco-Raec, David López.
Además de colocar estas bandas en una plataforma artificial en el suelo, Hughes propone situarlas en badenes que obliguen a reducir la velocidad. La electricidad producida iluminaría los paneles de advertencia de límite de velocidad y zona residencial.
"Con unos 5.000 vehículos a la hora se pueden generar 160 kw/hora, lo que equivale a iluminar 400 farolas durante un día, por ejemplo", señala López.
Las placas sólo sobresalen dos centímetros sobre la rasante de la carretera, un resalte muy pequeño para que el coche lo note. Hughes explica en un vídeo en la web del proyecto que esta instalación "no supone un mayor consumo de energía del vehículo". La energía generada por la carretera dependerá del número de módulos que se instalen, el número de vehículos que circulen por la plataforma, su frecuencia de paso y el peso de los vehículos, ya que, a más pesados, más electricidad. El coste oscila entre 20.000 y 40.000 euros.
