MADRID.- Un nuevo mapa a color del planeta enano Ceres ha revelado hasta diez puntos brillantes en su superficie. Diferencias en morfología y color en superficie, sugieren que Ceres fue una vez un cuerpo activo.
El científico principal de esta investigación, Chris Russell, ha explicado que este planeta enano no ha sido una roca inerte a lo largo de la historia. "Era activo, con procesos que dieron lugar a diferentes materiales en diferentes regiones", ha señalado durante la presentación de estos resultados en la Asamblea General de la Unión Europea de Geociencias en Viena.
La misión Dawn de la NASA, que la órbita de Ceres desde el pasado mes de marzo, ha determinado durante su misión que este planeta es 25 por ciento de hielo de agua y su superficie está llena de cráteres. Sin embargo, ahora se conoce que son más pequeños de lo que se creía.
También se han detectado un par de puntos o regiones muy brillantes en su hemisferio norte. Gracias al espectrómetro visible e infrarrojo (VIR), que examina Ceres en luz visible e infrarroja, los científicos han estado observando las temperaturas relativas a las características de la superficie de Ceres. El examen preliminar sugiere que existen al menos diez puntos brillantes en la superficie de Ceres que se comportan de manera extraña, informa en un comunicado el Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
Los expertos han indicado que habrá más detalles acerca de estos nuevos datos cuando la nave espacial comienza su primera fase científica intensiva, el 23 de abril, cuando se acerque a una distancia de 13.500 kilómetros del planeta.
"Los puntos brillantes seguirán fascinando el equipo científico, pero tendremos que esperar hasta acercarnos y ser capaces de resolverlos antes de que podamos determinar su origen", han apuntado los investigadores.
