El actor austríaco Maximilian Schell, ganador del Óscar en 1961 por Judgment at Nuremberg (¿Vencedores o vencidos?) ha muerto a los 83 años en una clínica de Innsbruck, según informó hoy su representante.
El actor falleció como resultado "de una repentina y grave enfermedad", explicó en un comunicado su representante, Patricia Baumbauer.
Schell, que nació en 1930 en Viena, emigró a Suiza en 1938, tras la anexión de Austria por la Alemania nazi, y obtuvo en 1961 el Globo de Oro y el Óscar al mejor actor protagonista masculino por su papel en ¿Vencedores o vencidos?, donde encarnó al abogado defensor del nazi Hans Rolfe.
Esa película recreaba los juicios de Nuremberg en el que se juzgó a los jerarcas nazis por genocidio y crímenes contra la humanidad durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Schell también logró otras dos nominaciones al Óscar, una como mejor actor por El hombre de la cabina de cristal, en 1976, y otra al mejor actor de reparto por Julia, en 1978. El primer papel en el que alcanzó fama internacional fue con El baile de los malditos, de 1957.
Nacido en una familia de tradición intelectual -era hijo del poeta y escritor suizo Hermann Ferdinand Schell y la actriz austríaca Margaret Noe Von Nordberg-, descubrió a una edad muy temprana su vocación por la actuación. Como actor participó en más de 90 películas, hizo incontables papeles teatrales y también fue productor y director de cine.
