El Manchester United quiere que Pep Guardiola se convierta en su nuevo Alex Ferguson y ante la incertidumbre sobre su renovación con el Barcelona se ha puesto en contacto con el agente del entrenador para plantearle la posibilidad de que fiche por el club inglés.
Según informa hoy el diario británico News of the World, la idea del Manchester es que Guardiola, que todavía no ha renovado su contrato con el club catalán, se involucre en la planificación técnica del campeón de la Premier a partir de la próxima temporada y que sustituya en el banquillo a Ferguson un año después.
"Un club me ha contactado, pero no ha habido conversaciones sobre dinero o sobre el proyecto deportivo. Cualquiera de estas cosas es algo que tiene que decidir Pep", afirma el agente de Guardiola, José María Orobitg, citado por el diario sensacionalista.
Este sábado, Joan Laporta aseguró que dejaría a Guardiola hasta Semana Santa para que tomara una decisión sobre la oferta de renovación planteada por el Barcelona y el técnico culé reiteró tras el partido contra el Sevilla que quiere zanjar el tema de la renovación por el momento.
Según esta información, el entrenador español es la opción que prefiere Ferguson (68 años) para tomar su relevo en el club inglés cuando finalmente deje el cargo, que desempeña desde 1986.
Ferguson es una leyenda del fútbol inglés. Se trata del técnico que más títulos ha logrado, con 11 títulos de Liga, cuatro de la Copa inglesa, dos 'Champions', dos mundialitos, una Recopa y una Copa de la UEFA, además de otros títulos de ámbito nacional.
En mayo de 2008 anunció que no tenía previsto seguir entrenando después de cumplir los 70 años (algo que ocurrirá el 31 de diciembre de 2011) e incluso sugirió que la temporada 2010-2011 sería la de su retirada definitiva de los campos de juego.
La versión que ofrece News of the World apunta a que, hasta entonces, Sir Alex quiere preparar con tiempo la transición y piensa que el sustituto ideal es Guardiola, el entrenador que le ganó en Roma la final de la pasada edición de la Liga de Campeones (2-0).
Otro nombre que se ha barajado en el entorno de Old Trafford es el del portugués José Mourinho, pero su fútbol conservador, su pasado como técnico del Chelsea y su personalidad pueden no ser la mejor carta de presentación ante los aficionados del Man United.
