Actualizado:El presidente de Sierra Leona, Ernest Bai Koroma, ha pedido ayuda urgente a la comunidad internacional para enfrentarse a las terribles consecuencias de las inundaciones y avalanchas que han dejado ya casi 400 muertos y cientos de desaparecidos en la capital, Freetown.
"La devastación nos está superando. Comunidades enteras han sido arrasadas. Necesitamos ayuda urgente ahora", ha declarado durante una visita a la zona de Regent, una de las más afectadas, en declaraciones a medios locales recogidas por Channel News Asia.
Por su parte, la Comunidad Económica de Estados de África Occidental (CEDEAO) se ha comprometido a poner en marcha un plan de ayuda urgente para ayudar al país africano, uno de los más pobres del continente.
"En estas circunstancias dolorosas, la CEDEAO expresa su profundo pesar a la familia del fallecido, el Gobierno y el pueblo de Sierra Leona", ha lamentado el presidente de la comisión de la organización regional, Marcel de Souza.
"El Presidente de la Comisión de la CEDEAO, Marcel de Souza, ha hecho un llamamiento a todos los organismos internacionales humanitarios para prestar ayuda al Gobierno, a las personas sin hogar y a apoyar las medidas adoptadas para evitar epidemias, en particular el cólera", concluye el texto.
