El bebé de seis meses de gestación que la levantadora chilena de pesas Elizabeth Poblete dio a luz el pasado 8 de diciembre mientras se entrenaba, en la ciudad brasileña de Sao Paulo, murió la noche del miércoles, informaron hoy fuentes de la Federación chilena de ese deporte.
La muerte del bebé ocurrió a las 20:37 horas locales en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) Pediátrica del hospital Sao Luiz, de Sao Paulo, donde permanecía desde que su madre dio a luz, precisaron las fuentes.
Poblete, de 22 años, que el año pasado representó a Chile en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín en la categoría de 75 kilos, tuvo el parto en el vestuario del club paulista en el que se entrenaba para preparar los próximos Juegos Odesur.
El pasado junio, Poblete obtuvo medalla de plata en el Panamericano de halterofilia disputado en Chicago (EEUU) y su objetivo era ganar el oro en los Odesur, que tendrán lugar el próximo año en la ciudad colombiana de Medellín.
La joven aseguró que ni siquiera sabía que estaba embarazada ni presentó cambios en su figura, por lo que mantuvo inalterable su programa de entrenamientos en los últimos meses, según dijeron su técnico y los dirigentes de la Federación.
El bebé pesó 1,150 kilos y midió 33,5 centímetros al nacer y había recibido el nombre de Eric José; respiraba gracias a la ayuda de aparatos, recibía complementos nutricionales por vía endovenosa y aplicaciones de antibióticos.
En el momento del deceso del bebé estaba presente su madre y miembros de la Federación. Elisabeth Poblete afrontaba además un serio problema económico, pues, según los dirigentes, el tratamiento del bebé en la UTI tenía un costo de alrededor de 5.000 dólares diarios, a lo que se debe agregar la atención posparto que recibió la deportista.
El miércoles, la subsecretaria chilena de Deportes, Marcela González, anunció que el gobierno la apoyaría para solventar los gastos.
