El primer ministro de Tailandia, Samak Sundaravej, compareció hoy ante el Tribunal Constitucional para defenderse de la acusación de que violó la Carta Magna al presentar un programa televisivo de cocina mientras ejercía un cargo público.
Sundaravej tendrá que dimitir si es hallado culpable de incompatibilidad en el ejercicio del jefatura del Gobierno con esa aparición en televisión.
El primer ministro, antes de acceder ocupar el cargo hace siete meses, presentaba el popular programa "Catando y protestando", en el que alternaba la preparación de platos tailandeses con comentarios sobre la actualidad del país.
Ya como jefe del Ejecutivo, continuó realizando algunos programas, lo que llevó a un grupo de senadores opositores a denunciar los hechos ante los tribunales, pues la ley prohíbe que los cargos públicos trabajen para compañías privadas.
Sundaravej sigue acorralado por la Alianza Popular para la Democracia (PAD), cuyos seguidores ocupan desde hace dos semanas el palacio gubernamental en Bangkok, generando una crisis política que ha llevado a la declaración del estado de emergencia en la capital y rumores de un nuevo golpe de Estado.
El pasado viernes, el primer ministro propuso un referéndum para solucionar el contencioso, pero la oposición afirma que es una mera estrategia para ganar tiempo y seguir en el poder.
Las protestas callejeras en Bangkok empezaron el pasado mayo, cuando los seguidores del PAD comenzaron a denunciar al Gobierno de Sundaravej, un veterano ultraderechista al que tachan de corrupto, desleal al monarca y ser un títere al servicio del ex primer ministro Thaksin Shinawatra, derrocado por una asonada en 2006.
