La Unión Europea (UE) debe mantener el paquete de rescate de emergencia acordado por los países de la zona del euro para reflotar la economía griega, afirmó hoy el ministro británico de Finanzas, George Osborne.
El titular de Economía hizo estas declaraciones después de que el primer ministro de Grecia, Yorgos Papandréu, anunciara ayer que someterá a referéndum el acuerdo alcanzado por la zona del euro para solucionar la crisis de su país, y que incluye una condonación del 50 por ciento de la deuda griega.
Papandréu declaró que en estos momentos el pueblo debe decidir en una consulta "si aprueba o no el acuerdo" y afirmó que, "si no lo acepta, entonces no se aplicará".
Ante el temor a que un voto negativo por parte de los griegos desencadene el caos en los mercados, Osborne dijo hoy a los medios británicos que la recuperación global depende de que ese acuerdo de los líderes europeos salga adelante.
"Grecia tiene que decidir cómo adopta sus propias decisiones, pero soy muy claro en que no debemos apartarnos del acuerdo alcanzado la pasada semana por los países de la zona del euro y miembros de la UE como el Reino Unido", señaló el ministro.
Según Osborne, "ésta es una parte muy importante de la recuperación, no sólo en la zona del euro sino en todo el mundo, incluyendo al Reino Unido, y si no solucionamos la zona euro, eso nos ocasionará verdaderos problemas para el Reino Unido".
Papandréu indicó ayer que en un asunto "que determina el futuro del país, el ciudadano tiene la primera palabra".
