El sociólogo británico de origen alemán Ralf Dahrendorf considera que, con su transición a la democracia, España se convirtió en "el primer país de una nueva liga de libertades" y que dicha etapa marcó el principio del interés por este tipo de procesos "en los países no democráticos".
Estas afirmaciones de Dahrendorf fueron trasladadas hoy a los asistentes a la ceremonia de entrega de los Premios Príncipe de Asturias por su esposa, Christianne, que recogió en su nombre el galardón de Ciencias Sociales con el que fue distinguido ya que no pudo hacerlo personalmente debido a una intervención quirúrgica.
Según Christianne Dahrendorf, el sociólogo se siente "profundamente honrado" por recibir una distinción española tras haber recomendado a los países del Este en su obra "Reflexiones sobre la revolución en Europa" que siguiesen "el mismo camino que España había emprendido con éxito".
Ralf Dahrendorf (Hamburgo, 1929) fue galardonado con el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Ciencias Sociales por su "gran contribución" a este campo y por su "preocupación por una Europa basada en las sociedades abiertas y cosmopolitas, donde arraiguen y se defiendan los derechos y libertades dentro de un nuevo orden internacional".
