Hace 15 años la caza furtiva era la principal amenaza para los elefantes africanos. Ahora, el aumento de la seguridad en las reservas Samburu y Buffalo Springs, del norte de Kenia, ha beneficiado a los paquidermos, pero también al ganado local que elige las zonas protegidas para pastar. "Los elefantes tienen más dificultades para competir con el ganado que contra los furtivos", apunta Thure Cerling, biólogo y profesor de Geología y Geofísica de la Universidad de Utah, en una investigación publicada hoy en PNAS.
Entre 2000 y 2006, Cerling y su equipo siguieron a una manada de elefantes mediante GPS y analizaron su dieta gracias a las mediciones de isótopos del pelo de su cola.
Los investigadores concluyen que, durante la estación seca, el pasto suponía el 15% de la dieta de los elefantes, mientras que en los meses húmedos era la mitad, un porcentaje importante si se ve reducido por la competencia del ganado. "Las disputas con el ganado por los pastos suponen que los elefantes tengan menos acceso al forraje de mejor calidad porque el ganado deja la hierba muy corta y fuera del alcance de los elefantes", explica Cerling.
Junto con el riesgo del cambio climático, que provocará más sequías y menos pastos en África, la competencia del ganado doméstico puede amenazar la reproducción de los elefantes africanos, señala Cerling. D
