España participará a través del personal que tiene desplegado en el cuartel general de Northwood (Reino Unido) en la misión contra la piratería que la OTAN desplegará en julio en aguas del Índico, con lo que la fragata "Blas de Lezo" dejará de cumplir sus actuales funciones de vigilancia en el área.
La nueva operación contra la piratería de la OTAN será desempeñada por la agrupación marítima permanente II, en la que no participan buques españoles, mientras que sí lo hacen en la número I, que finaliza su cometido el próximo 28 de agosto.
En la actualidad hay tres capitanes de fragata y dos suboficiales españoles en el Estado Mayor de la OTAN en Northwood, además de los dos capitanes de corbeta en el cuartel de mando de la operación de la Unión Europea (UE) "Atalanta".
La ministra española de Defensa, Carme Chacón, recalcó su satisfacción por la decisión de los aliados de continuar en aguas del Índico, con una presencia que será "continuada en el tiempo", dijo.
Explicó que a partir de ahora la OTAN tratará de mejorar la coordinación con la misión europea en cuanto al área que cubre cada uno y a las tareas que desempeñan.
Además, Chacón adelantó que la Alianza busca un acuerdo parecido al que la UE tiene con Kenia para entregar a este país a los piratas que captura en sus operaciones.
Pretenden acabar así con el vacío legal por el que en la actualidad los países aliados están obligados a poner en libertad a los presuntos delincuentes.
Por otra parte, España relevará en la misión "Atalanta" el próximo 16 de agosto la fragata "Numancia" con la "Canarias", añadió la ministra.
Además de una fragata, España colabora con el petrolero "Marqués de la Ensenada" y un avión de vigilancia P3-Orión en esta operación naval comunitaria.
