La Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura anunció hoy al finalizar la cumbre sobre seguridad alimentaria que algunos países se comprometieron a donar un total de 8.500 millones para la lucha contra el hambre en el mundo.
Según una nota de la FAO, los delegados de los países presentes en esta cumbre se "han comprometido para aumentar sus esfuerzos para la lucha contra el hambre y el desarrollo de la agricultura".
Estos recursos económicos, añade la FAO, se destinarán "a los países más golpeados por la actual crisis alimentaria, para que puedan aumentar su producción de comida en la próxima temporada de siembra".
Entre los donantes, el presidente del Gobierno de España, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, anunció 773 millones de dólares repartidos en cuatro años, mientras que Francia destinará 1.500 millones de dólares en cinco años.
Otras de las donaciones anunciadas hoy por la FAO fueron las de Venezuela (100 millones de dólares), el Banco Africano para el Desarrollo (1.000 millones), Japón (150 millones), Banco Islámico para el Desarrollo (1.500 millones, en cinco años), Kuwait (100 millones), Holanda (75 millones), Nueva Zelanda (7,5 millones), Reino Unido (590 millones), Naciones Unidas (100 millones) y el Banco Mundial (1.200 millones).
El director general de la FAO, Jacques Diouf, anunció durante la rueda de prensa al término de la cumbre que EEUU ha prometido 1.500 millones de ayuda contra el hambre.
