La Federación Española de Ciclismo (RFEC) ha tomado la decisión de personarse ante el Comité Olímpico Italiano (CONI) en el procedimiento disciplinario que se sigue en Italia ante al ciclista español Alejandro Valverde.
El propósito de la RFEC, según indica en un comunicado, "es el de velar, dentro de sus competencias, por el cumplimiento de las normas antidopaje, tanto de carácter nacional como internacional, por parte de todos los agentes intervinientes en el deporte ciclista español, y ello con el fin de proteger el derecho fundamental de sus deportistas a participar en actividades ciclistas libres de dopaje, garantizándose la equidad y la igualdad en la práctica del ciclismo"
La audiencia del Tribunal Antidopaje del CONI por el presunto dopaje del ciclista español Alejandro Valverde, en la denominada "Operación Puerto", la mayor intervención policial sobre dopaje en el deporte hispano, se celebrará el próximo 11 de mayo en el Estadio Olímpico de Roma.
El CONI informó el pasado 1 de abril que su Fiscalía Antidopaje había solicitado dos años de inhabilitación para Valverde, por una supuesta violación del artículo 2.2 del Código de la WADA, la Agencia Mundial Antidopaje.
El fiscal antidopaje del CONI, Ettore Torri, aseguró que la bolsa de sangre "número 18", incautada al doctor español Eufemiano Fuentes durante la "Operación Puerto", contiene la sangre del corredor murciano del Caisse d'Epargne y en ella se encontraron restos de EPO.
El pasado 19 de febrero, cuando Valverde llegó a Roma para ser interrogado por la Fiscalía Antidopaje del CONI, el ciclista recibió además la notificación de que está siendo investigado también por la Fiscalía de Roma en relación con la "Operación Puerto", la red de dopaje investigada en España.
