El FBI se hizo con más de 2.000 registros de llamadas telefónicas en Estados Unidos alegando emergencias por terrorismo que no existían o persuadiendo a las operadoras de telefonía para que proporcionaran los datos, informó The Washington Post el martes.
Responsables del FBI dieron su aprobación posterior para justificar la captación de registros telefónicos entre 2002 y 2006, dijo el periódico.
"Esta práctica terminó en 2006 y nunca incluyó la obtención de conversaciones telefónicas. Adicionalmente, se han dado pasos para asegurarnos de que situaciones parecidas no ocurran en el futuro'', dijo a Reuters el portavoz del FBI Michael Kortan.
El Washington Post dijo que había obtenido correos electrónicos que demostraban cómo los responsables antiterroristas no siguieron los procedimientos esperados a la hora de proteger las libertades civiles.
Los responsables del FBI confirmaron que se espera que una información del inspector general del Departamento de Justicia que se dará a conocer este mes concluya que el FBI violó la ley de manera continua con las peticiones de emergencia, dijo el diario.
La abogada general del FBI Valerie Caproni, en una entrevista concedida al Washington Post, dijo que el FBI violó técnicamente la ley de confidencialidad de las comunicaciones electrónicas.
"Deberíamos haber evitado que esas peticiones se hicieran de esa manera'', dijo al Washington Post.
Caproni dijo que el director del FBI, Robert Mueller, no sabía nada hasta que salió la investigación del inspector general, que comenzó a mitad de 2006.
"Ningún empleado del FBI usó métodos informales para obtener registros telefónicos más allá del interés de una investigación legítima'', dijo a Reuters Kortan.
