La Universidad de Tennessee (EEUU) ha concluido el estudio que demuestra que el idioma español nació en el municipio cántabro de Valderredible y no en San Millán de la Cogolla (La Rioja), ha anunciado hoy el presidente de Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla.
El presidente ha dedicado esta madrugada a leer este trabajo, dirigido por el profesor George Kaplan y que en sus 300 páginas demuestra que San Millán vivió, murió y fue enterrado en Valderredible, aunque después "se lo llevaron como reliquia" a La Rioja.
Según Revilla, "en torno a esa peregrinación de San Millán, se prueba que el idioma español" nació en Valderredible, un municipio situado al sur de Cantabria, limítrofe con Burgos.
El presidente no ha ofrecido más datos sobre la teoría del equipo de Kaplan, al que, según ha dicho, él no va a "llevar la contraria".
El trabajo de investigación, titulado "Valderredible (Cantabria, cuna del idioma español)", se publicará "dentro de poco" y es continuación de "El culto a San Millán en Valderredible: Las iglesias rupestre y la formación del Camino de Santiago", publicado por el Gobierno de Cantabria en 2007 y que ya esboza esa teoría sobre la cuna del español.
En ese trabajo, Kaplan sostiene que las ermitas rupestres de Valderredible fueron excavadas durante el siglo VII por los seguidores del culto a San Millán (474-574), un eremita que había vivido en una de ellas y había realizado milagros para los peregrinos durante los últimos 30 años de su vida.
Mantiene además que la construcción de estas iglesias rupestres en el período visigodo fue uno de los acontecimientos que condujeron a la formación del camino de peregrinación a Santiago.
"Los lingüistas han sospechado desde hace tiempo que el español nació en el sur de Cantabria a partir del año 700. Mi libro es el primero en aportar evidencias sólidas de que la región era realmente un centro cultural durante el siglo octavo", explica el propio Gregory Kaplan en la web de la Universidad de Tennessee, refiriéndose a su estudio sobre el culto a San Millán en Valderredible.
Según su teoría, serían los seguidores de ese culto al santo los que llevaron el castellano al monasterio de San Millán de la Cogolla, en La Rioja, donde se conservan los primeros testimonios escritos del castellano, las famosas "Glosas Emiliarenses".
El presidente ha destacado esta mañana la "trascendencia" que tiene para Cantabria y para Valderredible ser cuna de un idioma que a finales de siglo hablarán mil millones de personas y que tendrá como uno de sus focos el Centro de Estudios Hispánicos de Comillas.
