Desde el 2007, cuando comenzóla vacunación gratuita contra el virus del papiloma humano(VPH), Australia registró una reducción rápida de las verrugasgenitales.
El VPH causa las verrugas y el cáncer de cuello uterino.
Los resultados surgen de un estudio sobre 36.055 pacientesnuevas evaluadas entre el 2004 y el 2008 en el Centro de SaludSexual de Melbourne. Se les diagnosticaron verrugas genitales a3.826 mujeres, es decir el 10,6 por ciento.
En cada trimestre del 2008 bajó un 25,1 por ciento laproporción de mujeres menores de 28 años a las que se lesdiagnosticaron verrugas, indicó el equipo de C. K. Fairley enla revista Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Antes de la implementación del programa de inmunizacióngratuita contra el VPH, entre el 2004 y el 2007, los casos deverrugas genitales crecían un 1,8 por ciento por trimestre enese grupo etario.
Pero el equipo no registró una reducción significativa dela infección genital en mujeres mayores de 28 años. Las vacunasgratis estuvieron disponibles sólo para las menores de 26.
La disminución de nuevos casos en mujeres jóvenes se habríatraducido en un beneficio también para los hombres. En el 2008,los casos de verrugas genitales entre los varonesheterosexuales bajaron un 5 por ciento por trimestre. No asíentre los varones homosexuales.
"Estos datos deberían servirles a los gobiernos para tomardecisiones sobre la implementación del uso de la vacuna contrael VPH en las mujeres y ayudar a informar sobre la elección dela inmunización", concluyó el equipo.
