Aunque sus primeros pases los dio en el patio de la ikastola Ekintza, la cuna futbolística de Xabi Alonso fue el Antiguoko, un club de barrio, posiblemente el que más jugadores de Primera fabrica por metro cuadrado. El Athletic, tan dado a asaltar las huertas ajenas, en seguida le echó el ojo, pero Xabi tiene rh txuri urdin y su fichaje por la Real era cuestión de tiempo.
Ese momento llegó hace justo diez años, en el tradicional torneo internacional juvenil que organiza la Real Sociedad en Semana Santa. Mikel Etxarri, entonces secretario técnico del club donostiarra, se desplazó (y yo con él) hasta Zarautzpara ver a Xabi, que formaba parte del Gipuzkoa, una selección de los equipos de la provincia, a excepción de la Real, que completa los ocho equipos participantes. El flechazo fue inmediato. Al joven Alonso le sobraba nivel para jugar en el filial banquiazul. A los pocos días, Etxarri contactó con su padre, el ex realista Periko, y el acuerdo fue sencillo para desesperación de los ojeadores de Lezama.
Xabi no tardó en triunfar en la Real. Sólo la llegada de Clemente, que censuró el entrenamiento específico al que se le estaba sometiendo en Zubieta y le mandó cedido al Eibar, pudo haber malogrado su progresión. Toshack le repescó en el mercado de invierno y su eclosión como blanquiazul llegaría con el subcampeonato de Liga y la disputa de la Champions.
Las ansias de Astiazaran por traspasarle le llevaron a Liverpool, donde llegó y ganó la Copa de Europa. En Anfield, Xabi tiene su propia canción. Al son del Let it snow, de Diana Krall, la grada le canta "oh the man is a midfield maestro and his pass is so delightful, everybody wants to know, ¡Alonso, Alonso, Alonso!". (Este tío es un maestro del centro del campo y su pase es una delicia. Todos quieren conocerle). Yo conocí a Xabi tal día como hoy hace diez años. Fue en Zarautz, donde, como reza en The Cavern, todo empezó.
